창의적 | 목회적 | 기업적 정신

최영태는 한국에서 자라면서, 어린 시절에는 스타워즈 같은 헐리웃 영화와 드래곤볼 같은 일본 만화에 푹 빠져 살았다. 엔터테인먼트 분야에 대한 관심은 20여년 동안 영화 제작시각 예술 창작 분야에서 학업과 경력으로 이어졌고, 한국과 캐나다의 여러 예술 기관에서 학생들을 가르치기도 하였다. 다국적 예술가들과 함께 그가 제작에 참여했던 많은 창작 프로젝트는 전 세계적으로 널리 소개되었다.

30대에는 정체성에 대해 진지하게 고민하면서 신앙과 예술을 조화시키기 위한 노력을 기울이게 되었다. 이 고민은 하나님의 부르심으로 이어졌고, 캐나다 리젠트 신학 대학원 (Regent College)에서 기독교 예술학(Christianity and the arts)으로 목회학 석사 학위를 마친 뒤, 캐나다 장로 교단의 웨스트민스터 노회에서 목사 안수를 받았다. 그 후 본격적으로 밴쿠버 기독교 영화제 (Missions Fest Vancouver Film Festival) 위원장을 비롯해 지난 10년 동안 교단을 초월하여 다양한 신앙 공동체를 섬겼다.

이제 영태는 예술과 목회, 그리고 문화라는 세 영역의 접점에서 열정을 가지고 섬기고 있으며, 직접 창작 활동 및 문화 사업도 병행하는 학제간(interdisciplinary)의 목사로 자신을 규정한다. 한 때 자신도 경험한 바 있는 방황하는 예술가, 그 자신이 여전히 그 일부로 섬기고 있는 상처받은 지역 공동체, 자신을 형성하는 데 일조한 깨어진 문화 생태계에 대한 특별하고 진지한 관심과 애정을 가지고 있다. 그런 이유로, 사회를 아름답게 만드는 변혁의 힘을 지닌 예술 창작에 대한 확고한 확신을 가지고, 예술가들의 소명을 양성하는 지속가능한 창작의 삶을 추구하고 있다.​

최근 영태는 이러한 비전을 실천하는 포이에오 (Poieo Center)를 설립하여 그 곳에서 젊은 예술가들의 친구로 지내고 있으며 한 권의 책 <Christian Witness in Cascadian Soil, edited by Ross Lockhart (Cascade, 2021)>에 예술 사역에 관한 글을 기고하였고, 포이에오의 철학이 담긴 <포이에오 영화 프로젝트> 개발에 힘을 쏟고 있다. 아내 제니 그리고 딸 클레어와 함께 캐나다 비씨 주 랭리에 살고 있다.
